LIVE BLOG: Clinton Becomes First Woman Nominated for President

update

The Democratic Party made it official Tuesday, naming Hillary Clinton their candidate for president in 2016 – and making history by selecting the first woman to represent a major U.S. political party. Following the roll call vote, Tuesday's speakers included former President Bill Clinton as well as the Mothers of the Movement -- the mothers of Trayvon Martin, Eric Garner, Michael Brown, Sandra Bland and other young black victims of violence.

"Sugar and spice are nice, but intelligence and courage to lead are what women are made of," Benjamin said.

U.S. Senator Barbara Boxer of California will be the final speaker in the "women and families" section.

"The right wing has thrown everything at Hillary, not only the kitchen sink and the stove, but the refrigerator, too, and she's still standing," Boxer says. It draws a few cheers.

At the arena, VOA's Jim Fry says the floor of the convention is relatively quiet as delegates await former President Bill Clinton's speech later tonight.
