Catalan parliament delays vote on new regional leader
Protests broke out in the Spanish city of Barcelona Tuesday after Catalonia’s parliament postponed a vote on who should be president of the region. Pro-independence parties, which form a majority in the parliament, had nominated only one candidate - the exiled former leader Carles Puigdemont. The stand-off between Barcelona and Madrid looks set to deepen as parties on all sides of the debate harden their positions, as Henry Ridgwell reports.

U.S. President Donald Trump is attending the World Economic Forum in the Swiss mountain resort of Davos – an event seen as the annual signature gathering of the global elite. President Trump is expected to push his agenda of ‘America First’, which calls for restructuring global trade deals and has led Washington to impose tariffs on some imports. As Henry Ridgwell reports, delegates in Davos are braced for the collision of competing visions for the global economy.
Russia tightened its so-called "foreign agent" law last month to target overseas media operating in the country. It means the government can require media outlets to state that they are "foreign agents", and they also have to submit to intensive scrutiny of staffing and financing. Voice of America is among the media organizations to receive such a designation. French President due to travel to London Thursday
France is set to demand that Britain pay more to deal with the ongoing migrant crisis around the northern port of Calais – the main gateway from the European mainland to the UK. Hundreds of migrants are living in dire conditions in makeshift camps around the French city. Chips' forced surrender of four German soldiers
A U.S. Army dog who saved the lives of his platoon during the Allied invasion of Sicily in 1943 has been posthumously awarded the PDSA ‘Dickin’ Medal – which recognizes the actions of animals serving in military conflict. Anger has been growing over government tax hikes
Protesters took to the streets in towns and cities across Tunisia for a fourth day Friday, as anger grows over price hikes introduced by the government. Demonstrations in 2011 in Tunisia grew into the revolution that overthrew the government and triggered a wave of uprisings across the Arab world.
